she'd been sitting too long at hicksville station, the conductor pops out, extends his invitation, he said if you wanna go girl you gotta get on. she stepped on the train and off the platform, she was headed to the city which was not her norm, but life's for the living sometimes you've gotta dive in. so scared to step outside, and leave the safety of her life, she's been waiting for this moment, but so scared it has arrived. and i say, get out of here girl, no time for crying, chin up, get ready, you'll be just fine, you've prepared for this, waited for this day, time to show 'em all, blow 'em all away. she sat in a seat next to the window, looking through her phone to make the time go, counting down the moments until her train would arrive. it pulled with a screech into penn station, couldn't move her feet she looked for an explanation, to why she couldn't get her nerves to calm down.

back at lincoln road park, where i chased my dreams, i could be everything, anything that id wanna be, now i'm older, i'm taller, i can grow a beard, but i miss all those times back many a-year. and as my eyes start to close and things are fading to black, i remember advice i heard way, way back, when we looked on the world like it was all ours, long before we all grew so jaded and tired, so c'mon tell me again to live like we'll never die. please don't ask why i shake, it's cause i know what it takes, i've seen things that keep me up at night, it's all on my face and if you told me at the park all of the things i know now, i'd tell you, that you're crazy, get out of town. you know how much I hate when you shake, when you haven't slept for days it's more then i can take, please promise me that you'll get some sleep (t'night), and just don't lay there in bed, try tea, or counting sheep you have to get out of your head, promise me you won't lie awake (t'night), you won't make those same old mistakes (t'night), c'mon babe it's getting late, don't give me that same tired excuse, there's thing on your mind that you've gotta let loose, you know, you gotta get out of your head, at this rate before long you'll look like the dead, have you heard a single thing i said? if your eyes are getting heavy you should head up to bed. back at lincoln road park, with the sun to my right, i knew it was time to head home for the night, so i'd pick up all my stuff, and head back to the house, to sit with the family watch the game from the couch.

jake's bag sat packed next to the door, that he waits for his father to open, tired and he'd need a shave, he'd say son, i didn't raise a quitter, you've always worked so hard, this isn't how you were raised. and then he'd clear his throat and look jake in the eyes, he'd say that life is tough, you'll want to quit a thousand times, but son, don't give up, he'd say, you've got to keep on fighting strong, keep your head held way up high, take the whole damned world on, and when it tries to knock you down tries to say what you can't do, for me son, show em all a thing or two. just then jake's door came ajar, and in stepped his brother, he said you know he'll never come, jake said, matt you know that's just not true, he'll walk in any minute, tired and he'll need a shave. and then he'll clear his throat and look me in the eyes, he'll say that life is tough, you'll want to quit a thousand times, but son, don't give up, he'll say, you've got to keep on fighting strong, keep your head held way up high, take the whole damned world on, and when it tries to knock you down tries to say what you can't do, for me son, show em all a thing or matt said jake your talking crazy, you know dad won't ever show his face, he said you'll be sitting here for days and nights and weeks, and i'll be far away from this god forsaken place, he said to jake, we've got to go (we've got to go, we've got to go), it's not quitting we have to leave this place, he said to jake we've got to go (we've got to go, we've got to go), jake checked his pockets twice and left with matt.

in a filthy old bar, on a tattered old stool, sat a man who believes all his visions were true, but folk round this town all said "he's gone mad." his hair hung too long, he looked old for his age, his face hung defeated, in bad need of a shave, he told me his tale, for two shots and a beer. let em believe it was just lies that he'd told, the truth keep inside wait and explode. i won't let you down, i won't let you down. he took a slug of his beer, he swished it around, took his first shot, slammed the glass down, and then in hushed tones, he told me it all. he started talking slow, then he spoke real real fast, and when he had finished i nervously laughed, he asked if i believed or was i like the rest?

she'd been sitting too long at hicksville station,
the conductor pops out, extends his invitation,
he said if you wanna go girl you gotta get on.
she stepped on the train and off the platform,
she was headed to the city which was not her norm,
but life's for the living sometimes you've gotta dive in.

so scared to step outside,
and leave the safety of her life,
she's been waiting for this moment,
but so scared it has arrived.

and i say,
get out of here girl,
no time for crying,
chin up, get ready,
you'll be just fine,
you've prepared for this,
waited for this day,
time to show 'em all,
blow 'em all away.

she sat in a seat next to the window,
looking through her phone to make the time go,
counting down the moments until her train would arrive.
it pulled with a screech into penn station,
couldn't move her feet she looked for an explanation,
to why she couldn't get her nerves to calm down.

back at lincoln road park,
where i chased my dreams,

and if you told me at the park all of the things i know now,
i'd tell you, that you're crazy, get out of town.

you know how much I hate when you shake,
when you haven't slept for days it's more then i can take,
please promise me that you'll get some sleep (t'night),
and just don't lay there in bed,
try tea, or counting sheep you have to get out of your head,
promise me you won't lie awake (t'night),
you won't make those same old mistakes (t'night),
c'mon babe it's getting late,
don't give me that same tired excuse,
there's thing on your mind that you've gotta let loose,
you know, you gotta get out of your head,
at this rate before long you'll look like the dead,
have you heard a single thing i said?
if your eyes are getting heavy you should head up to bed.

back at lincoln road park,

i knew it was time to head home for the night,

You, Me, and the Dog

so i'm back chasing the same old dream,
with my head in the clouds i can't see anything,
else if i try to, please don't make me lie to your face,
and all those times i spent making those same old mistakes,
doing those same old things, like i'm repeating a take,
if i work hard i know i can fix things this time.

said "jess grab all your stuff pack it in the car,
i got willie dog and i got my guitar,
let's head out now under cover of night,
we'll be off the island 'fore it even gets bright,
let's leave this town and let's never look back.

joe knew a guy living in nyc,
who knew a guy that used to know me,
and he called me that night at a quarter to four,
took a moment to gather my wherewithal,
even through the phone his scent was thick as a wall,
he didn't have to say, i knew as soon as he called,

voice on the other end of the phone,
"hey jason time to get up,"
i say hey man it's 3:45,
"hey jason time to get up,"
i said hey alex are you out of your mind,
he said "no, trust me, now is the time,
tonights our one chance to get out alive!"

and i can see the walls around me crashing in as i go,
feels like the whole worlds spinning faster my life's getting out of control,
i'll just drive a little faster, make the music louder,
ill just keep singing "'babe you gotta believe,
we'll be just fine you, me, and the dog "

darling you and i can rule this whole vast land,
we'll tear it down brick by brick with our bare hands,
if we got to please don't make me go it alone,
jessie if things really start to look bleak,
we'll rely on each other to make it the week,
we've just got to leave now and never return
